March 2015 complete

I fell asleep around midnight last night trying to finish putting my work from March on to My London Diary, waking with a start to find a black screen in front of me, and when I moved the mouse to rouse the monitor from its dreams, found myself facing a blank page where I’d almost completed the coding. In my daze it seemed something of a calamity.

Fortunately hitting Ctrl+Z to undo my last action – presumbably hitting the space bar with the page selected as I collapsed on the keys – restored my work, although had I been thinking clearly I would have realised that only the few keystrokes I had made since the last saved version would in any case have been lost. But it was certainly time to give up and go to bed. And finish the work the following morning, which I now have. I think there are 40 stories from March, though not all have a great deal of content, and a couple are just pictures from my occasional days off.

But I’m also aware of the many events I’ve been aware of but been unable to cover, invitations I’ve had to refuse because I have to be at another place. We are indeed living in interesting times, and it is something of a curse.

Technical Note

According to Lightroom I took 9,410 pictures in March 2015, though there will have been quite a few others that for various reasons technical and aesthetic I discarded rather than import. Of these 1,179 used flash, mainly for night images, with perhaps a couple of hundred for flash fill. About 750 of the total (8%) were submitted to Demotix or elsewhere, and roughly twice that number are on My London Diary.

Of those that made it, I made 4,885 on the Nikon D700, of which 4308 were with the 16-35mm, 419 with the 70-300mm, 122 with the 16mm fisheye and just 36 with the 20mm f2.8.

Of the 4,252 on the Nikon D800E, 4181 were made with the 18-105mm, with just 67 using the 16mm fisheye, which will have been for conversion to panoramic landscapes. There were also 4 taken with the 16-35mm, almost certainly when I fitted this lens to the D800E mistaking it for the D700!

The remaining exposures included 11 using the Fuji X-Pro1, mainly trying out the newly bought XF10-24mm zoom on a bed of crocuses in my back garden, and 262 with the Fuji X-T1, mainly with the same zoom, but also with the XF18mmf2, XF35mmf1.4 and XF18-55 zoom. I’d love to be able to move to the smaller and lighter Fuji cameras and lenses for all of my work, but though the lenses are superb I still have problems using the cameras – more about which in a later post.
