Eve Arnold 1912-2012

Eve Arnold joined Magnum 60 years ago and became a full member in 1957. She was just around a hundred days short of a hundred years when she died on Wednesday, though I read she had not taken any pictures for five years or so, but certainly hers was a remarkable career.

There are 50 pictures in her Magnum portfolio, and perhaps the one I like best is an image of Marlene Dietrich taken in 1952. Somehow I find much of her later work a little disappointing, though perhaps I should warm to a photographer who could make Margaret Thatcher look so ill at ease. But that is a picture that for me at least just does not work. There are also several books on the Magnum site, and for me the best is Flashback! the Fifties. Of course she was a very good photographer, but I don’t feel she really lived up to the promise of this early work, becoming an excellent and dependable but rather corporate Magnum photographer, losing the excitement.

Arnold was best known for her pictures of Marilyn Monroe, and looking through these 62 images at Magnum there are indeed some fine pictures, but also others that seem rather ordinary. Some pictures show a great intimacy and give us some insight into the life and person of the star, but others seem more typical Hollywood publicity.

It is perhaps appropriate that the Monroe Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, despite being named after its owners and not the star, should be collating a list of links to tributes to Eve Arnold , all of which I imagine will be rather more fulsome than mine. The Monroe gallery site, currently showing an exhibition of work, mainly portraits, by John Loengard is also worth a look, and I note that the Dietrich picture is one of three of Arnold’s works on it.

Traditionally at this time of year newspapers and the media go back over the year, printing or reprinting the photographs which they think were the highlights of the year. It’s a practice I’ve seldom found illuminating but I suppose it does take a bit of pressure off and let editors and journalists take a bit of a break at this time of year, though of course events around the world keep on even if they are not reported in depth. And this year perhaps the most important of these events are taking place almost hidden from the press, who largely have to rely on bloggers and those taking part in the uprising in Syria for any information.

One of my pictures that got into some of the 2010 round-ups

Domestically the two big stories of 2011, so far as the papers etc are concerned, were a wedding and the outbreak of looting and in particular arson in August following the police shooting of Mark Duggan, or more precisely following the police refusal to engage sensibly with the public after that shooting, and the beating of a young woman who questioned them on the street.

There was of course no news about the wedding, an almost entirely predictable circus of little or no consequence. Flames do however make for some dramatic images, and there were many photographers who went to take pictures, often at considerable risk, of the events on our streets. But though I admire them and some of the images that were made, I do perhaps wonder how much these tell us about what was happening and more importantly why it was happening.  Almost certainly there are photographers who have been working on longer-term projects in our inner-cities whose work would cast more light on the issues, but lack the drama and the topicality that would attract the media money.

One publication that since it’s inception has published photo stories that look at issues around the world in greater depth, often printing work that has failed to find other outlets, is Foto8 magazine. I’ve been a subscriber to the magazine since its foundation in 2002, and somewhere around the house have all the 29 issues, which now are published twice a year.  These can now also be read on-line and it is a fine collection.  You can also of course buy the print issues on-line, including the current issue, though at present it does not appear to be possible to become a Foto8 member. Foto8 also has a gallery with regular shows and runs various photography events as well as publishing material on-line.

So if you get bored with looking at similar pictures of the same events in every newspaper and news programme, take a look at the last ten years seen through very different eyes on Foto8, along with some thought-provoking articles about documentary photography.

Scopophilia

I was impressed by Nan Goldin‘s work when her The Ballad of Sexual Dependency was published in book form here around 1989 (the well-thumbed copy is still on my shelf), but it was really seeing the slide show on which the book was based in 2002 that truly made me appreciate her work, and to write about her at some length in Nan Goldin’s Mirror on Life.  (The previous post is a shorter piece, Nan Goldin – Police swoop about one of the sillier reactions to her work which led to me re-writing and posting the earlier piece here.)

I’ve  not seen her most recent show, Scopophilia, (there is an installation video too) which closed in New York just before Christmas, but it was interesting to see some of the reviews of this show which “pairs her own autobiographical images with new photographs of paintings and sculpture from the Louvre’s collection.”

Joerg Colberg noted that this statement from the press release gave him a queasy feeling, and I read it too, thinking things like ‘Oh Dear!’ and ‘pretentious crap’ and there was more to follow.

But then James Danziger on his The Year in Pictures blog praised it as “The one exhibition not to miss before Christmas“though he did go on to say that his favourite part of the exhibit was one of Goldin’s “trademark slide shows.” Certainly for anyone not familiar with these, that would have made a visit worthwhile, and for those of us who have already experienced them (and I watched all at the Whitechapel through at least twice in 2002) a pleasant reminder.

But presumably Colberg took that as read, and his review concentrates on the work photographing the artworks at the Louvre which were shown paired with some of Goldin’s earlier ‘autobiographical’ images. It’s worth reading what he has to say about the exercise, which he concluded made “an incredibly pedestrian exhibition.” I have a strong feeling I would have been in complete agreement.

Everybody Street

If only there were more hours in the day I would spend much more time on American Suburb X, particularly on ASX TV, where every time I visit I find more things to watch ‘later’. One particular series that I have found time for some is ‘Everybody Street‘,  segments of a documentary about photographers who have used New York City street life as a common thread in their work.  Director Cheryl Dunn was commissioned to make it by the Seaport Museum, New York and it was first shown at the museum in September 2010 in conjunction with the exhibit Alfred Stieglitz New York. Although I don’t really buy the link the museum and film-maker try to make between Stieglitz and street photography – although he was one of the first photographers to take an often hand-held camera out onto the city streets, his intentions were so very different – it is still well worth watching.  On the museum site you can view the film trailer and links to clips showing Joel Meyerowitz, Bruce Gilden and Mary Ellen Mark.

ASX has a longer piece on Bruce Gilden, which near the beginning shows him being attacked by a woman who doesn’t appreciate being photographed as well as on Meyerowitz and Bruce Davidson.

Other photographers in the film, some of whom appear briefly in the trailer include Martha Cooper, Rebecca Lepkoff, Jeff Mermelestein, Clayton Patterson, Ricky Powell, Jamel Shabazz, Luc Sante, Tim Barber, and Bonnie Yochelson, and there are links to their work on the Everybody Street page.

Bonnie Yochelson, formerly the curator of prints and photographs at the Museum of the City of New York, is also the author of the book Alfred Stieglitz New York which was brought out to accompany the show, the first collected exhibition of his work on the the city since he organised his own show in 1932.  As someone who owns the heavyweight two volume collection of his best works, and greatly admire a few images such as his Terminal I’ve never thought his pictures of the city of New York were his strongest hand, and certainly not the best images of the city architecture (the link to this picture in the Getty collection gives the photographer’s comments on why he took this image; it is difficult for us to look at it as he did then because of the enormous load of nostalgia; years ago I wrote about it being like going down the local bus garage to take photographs, though now I might even need to revise that term to ‘transport interchange’.)

Yochelson was of course also responsible for the fine ‘Changing New York‘ showcasing the work of Berenice Abbott, another photographer like Stieglitz I’ve written about at some length in the past (no longer on line, but you can read a review of the 1997 edition by Elsa Dorfmann) as well as viewing a fine selection of her work on-line at the New York Public Library. Berenice Abbott: American Photographer, with text by Hank O’Neal has of course been on my bookshelf since soon after it was published in the 1980s.

Not For My Xmas Present!

I won’t be rushing out to buy a copy of  Vivian Maier: Street Photographer which, according to Amazon will be available from 8 Dec, published by Powerhouse Books as a 128 page hardcover (ISBN-10: 1576875776 ISBN-13: 978-1576875773) at the pre-order price of £24.64. It’s cheaper in the US, and the Amazon page includes a one minute video which exposes the book and around twenty of her pictures, and makes very clear why I think the hype around her is unjustified.

Make no mistake, Maier was a good photographer. A very good eye who picked up stuff from all sorts of guys and made her own take of it. You can see in the video and the half a dozen images on the web site that she has learnt well from Walker Evans, from Lisette Model, from Lee Friedlander, from Henri Cartier-Bresson from Harry Callaghan and from others. What you don’t see, despite the several self-portraits, is any clue as to who Maier herself was as an artist.

It says in the text that she took over 100,000 photographs in a period from the 1950s to the 1990s, though overwhelmingly I think her work shows its 1930s roots. 100,000 over 40 years is a relatively modest output and not unusual for the keen amateur that she was, at 2,500 pictures a year, it works out at around 50 a week. It’s hard also to know how much of the back-story is true. Did she show her work to no-one, or was it that the people in Chicago she did show her work to didn’t find it of particular interest.

Mike Johnston on The Online Photographer seems considerably more convinced of the book’s worth than me. It seems a pleasant enough volume, but certainly nothing to get excited about, and I sincerely hope nobody buys me it for Christmas, though I’m sure there will be considerable media hype and many photographers are likely to find a copy jammed in their stocking. Please, please not for me.

There are obviously others who disagree with my verdict on her, and the featured comment by Sherwood McLernon says “I think of it as the book that I had hoped The Americans by Robert Frank would have been, but wasn’t.” which must deserve some kind of award.

I don’t know where McLernon was sitting waiting for the publication of ‘The Americans’ in  1958. Maier had hardly started in photography when Frank took 2 years and around 28,000 images to make the work in 1955-7. Published first in France, where Robert Delpire put his future with the family firm on the line to get it in print, it shocked the photography world, or at least those who saw it, as most of the reviews were extremely negative. Wikipedia quotes Popular Photography as deriding his images as “meaningless blur, grain, muddy exposures, drunken horizons and general sloppiness.

The Americans is in no way a perfect book, but it became a seminal book, although it remains in some respects a difficult book. Maier’s work (both in the show and on the various web sites) is safe and easy to assimilate. If I wanted one word to describe it, I think “anodyne” would do nicely, whereas for Frank it would be “iconoclastic.” The mention of Frank is however interesting, as looking at her work in the gallery this summer, one thought that came to me was that despite her obvious talent and facility, she had never really got to grips with his work.

If you are looking for a present for a photographer with any interest in street photography and you find they haven’t got a copy of ‘The Americans’ then I suggest you buy that rather than this book. Maier’s work is easy listening while Frank’s remains challenging, even after I’ve known it since the 1970s when I was getting into the medium.

If you are looking for a present for a photographer with any interest in street photography and you find they haven’t got a copy of ‘The Americans’ then I suggest you buy that rather than this book. Maier’s work is easy listening while Frank’s is still challenging.

You might also want to look at Martin Parr’s pick of the best books of the decade, made for the PhotoIreland Festival in the Summer. Perhaps among a few of his choices I might endorse is John Gossage’s  Berlin in the Time of the Wall – you can see a selection of the pictures at the Stephen Daiter Gallery, but even at the reduced price of $132 it’s a little expensive for my relatives.

Perhaps at some time I’ll try and write more seriously about my own picks of recent photography books, and I have another of my own Blurb publications arriving shortly.

Rashid Talukder 1939 – 2011

I first became aware of Rashid Talukder at a show I wrote about here in 2008, ‘Bangladesh 1971‘ at Autograph, documenting the birth of that nation. His work in that show was outstanding and made me want to know more about him, and I found over 90 images on Majority World which confirmed my admiration for him. It was a vew further strengthened by his seeing his pictures again in Where Three Dreams Cross, 150 Years of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, shown at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 2010.

You can read a long and loving obituary of this man, the ‘elder brother’ of Bangladesh photography, in Shahidul Alam’s The light we failed to see, which gives a real insight into the man as well as the problems he faced as a photographer in Bangladesh. Alam, who co-curated both of the shows mentioned, has written a moving piece on his friend and colleague that deserves to be read in full, so I won’t quote from it, just urge you to read it, to take a long look at Talukder’s photographs and to be prepared to rethink some of your preconceptions about the history of photography.

=================================================

Naomi Rosenblum‘s ‘A World History of Photography’, first published in 1984 was at the time a ground-breaking volume, and one that I seized on with delight for my teaching as  it began to open our eyes to some of the things that had happened outside of the USA and Western Europe (and also for some of her insights into New York photography of which she and in particular her husband Walter Rosenblum had been such an important part) , but we can now see there was so much ground it left unexplored.

Perhaps what we now need is a ‘Majority World History of Photography’ which would tell us more of that story.

American Photography

Back in the 1970s when I first was able to afford to be a photographer there was really only one UK magazine that held any interest for me, Creative Camera. Much of that interest came in the work of other photographers from around the world, but particularly from the USA that it published.

There were other UK magazines available. Amateur Photographer did have the occasional feature of interest – and I had looked at its weekly issues in the local library since I was in long trousers. I’d missed the fairly brief period when Photography magazine was at its best, though I think the year book was still edited by Norman Hall when I first bought a copy. The British Journal of Photography was very much a trade journal, though it did occasionally publish a review of one of the very few photography shows that took place then, sometimes of interest, but after reading a couple of them I was moved to write to the editor. I got a very nice letter back from him, saying that one of their reviewers was a very nice old man close to retirement and his heart was in the right place. About their new young reviewer he confided that he didn’t understand a word of what he wrote either.

The rest of the UK photographic press (and there wasn’t a great deal) was aimed squarely at amatuers, much of it written by amatuers too, including some technical pieces and I think the equipment reviews.

There is an excellent insider’s view of the UK at this time which was written by Bill Jay in 2004 that you can read on Weeping Ash, though it is a little polished by hindsight as are all our views of the past (and Jay acknowleges this at the start of his piece.) As someone with a keen interest in photography I had no awareness at all of ‘Album‘ until well after it’s demise, years later I did buy a couple of back issues. Album failed because it was published by and for a very small clique, and Jay very much writes as one of that handful of people in the UK, probably most of whom get a name-check in his piece.

Creative Camera did just about find a place in the magazine racks at least at a few large and favoured newsagents, and I looked through it and bought the occasional copy that interested me (I think the first around a year after Jay left as editor) and later took out a subscription and bought as many back issues as were still available.

But for many things we looked to magazines that came from the USA, Popular Photography and Modern Photography, both for in-depth technical features (Pop Photo stripped down the gear and sometimes tested several examples of a lens) and also their portfolios and features on past and present photographers. Much later I did have a sub, but for years I would go each month and flick through them in WH Smith’s, buying them if they caught my interest.

Pop Photo is still publishing, though much changed, having incorporated its rival long ago. Another and I think newer magazine from the same stable is American Photography, which has just launched a new web site with some interesting content.

Of course, back in the ’70s the encompassing US nature of these magazines was hardly a problem. Amercia, and New York in  particular had been the centre of new work in photography for much of the preceeding 50 or so years (with a little from the West Coast too.) Since then things have changed, with photography emerging and being recognised around the world, and the US American hegemony now seems unacceptable.  These US magazines do still reflect a very US-centric worldview that grates when I read them. Perhaps the most interesting feature on the new website is however In Bangladesh… with pictures by Sayed Asif Mahmud, also featured on Mrs.Deane, and which writer Dan Abbe compares with the work of Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama.

Paris 1961

The French authorities denied it happened, but in Paris on 17 October 1961 police attacked many thousands of Algerians who were protesting across the city against the war in Algeria and in particular a curfew that had been imposed on the community, killing an unknown number of them – possibly as many as 300, but at least 50, and wounding many more. Many were beaten to death and their bodies thrown into the Seine. More than 11,000 others were arrested and bussed to three makeshift camps around the city, held for days without food and subjected to beatings. Many Algerians were deported back to Algeria.

The crackdown was ordered by Paris police chief Maurice Papon and later in the year President de Gaulle awarded him the Légion d’Honneur. Officially there were only three deaths and 64 wounded. The events were only accurately reported at the time in a few militant left
publications, though some details emerged in a National Assembly debate
at the end of the month. It was only around 37 years later that the
full truth of the events really emerged.

You can read much more about it in Le Monde, where you can see a set of photographs by Henri Georges, then a photographer for ‘Liberation‘, now published for the first time. There are also a number of other links to features.

We now live in very different times, with so many people photographing events and then – at least in countries like ours – tweeting and posting about what is happening. But we still see the way that the newspapers, radio and TV are too ready to accept the often misleading and sometimes entirely fabricated stories put out by police and other official sources. There was a reminder of this in yesterday’s parliamentary debate on the Hillsborough disaster, as well as a reminder of what happened over the death of Ian Tomlinson. And so many other stories, particularly those involving police violence and deaths in custody.

If you want to know what is happening on our streets, you need to be on them, and not rely on what you read in the papers or see on TV. If you can’t be there, then, unreliable as many tweets and other citizen journalism reports are, taken as a whole and together with the reports in the commercial media they are more likely to give you a true picture. If Twitter had been around in 1961 it would not have been possible to brush several hundred corpses under the carpet.

Kazuo Kitai

I’ve come across several mentions recently of a Japanese photographer whose work I was previously unfamiliar with (he wan’t included in ‘Japanese Photography Today and Its Origin’ which I saw at the ICA in 1979), and who I’m sure we will get to know rather better.

Kazuo Kitai was born in 1944 in Manchuria (or China – depending on who you believe), graduated in Art in Tokyo in 1965 and became well-known in Japan in the 1970s, and in 1975 was the first winner of the major Kimura Ihee prize. As well as photographing in Japan, he returned to China to photograph in the 1970s (shown last year at the Zen Gallery in Tokyo) and also visited Spain in 1977, taking colour pictures that have recently been published in the book Spanish Nights.

He has exhibited with Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama, Shomei Tomatsu, Masahisa Fukase, Shoji Ueda and Nobuyoshi Araki among Japanese names better known to me. Since 2005 he has photographed a monthly photo-essay for the magazine ‘Nippon Camera’ and some of these have now been published in two books, “Walking with Leica – 1” and “Walking with Leica-2”, and there are also other books of his work available from Tosei, where Kitai has a show scheduled for Jan 2012.

Book collectors might be advised to stock up on his work, particularly some of the earlier of his 15 or so publications, as I’m sure prices will rise given the attention he is currently getting.

From the Lions Point Of View

Isn’t it a thrill to have him here in London” said the woman behind me to a friend as we we all waited, hardly an empty seat in the small lecture area of National Geographics’s Regent St first floor, and the next hour or so listening to Shahidul Alam talking, showing pictures and answering questions certainly justified her anticipation.

© 2011, Peter Marshall

Probably most of us in the audience had some idea of the incredible transformation Dr Alam has made to the world of photography, not just in his native Bangladesh but worldwide, although so much still remains to be done, but I think all of us found there was even more to him – and his family – than we had been previously aware.

Alam’s mother in particular was a formidable woman; determined to get a university education despite the opposition of her mother to the education of women, she left home every morning in a burkha “going to visit friends” and went to study. Armed with her degree she dedicated herself to the education of women, and having found little backing for her project, bought a tent and used it to set up her own school for girls.

Later too we heard that his father had dared to evade the “invitation” sent to him along with the other leading intellectuals of the country to take tea with the occupying Pakistani generals in 1971 just a few days before the end of the war. It was a story accompanied by a picture by Rashid Talukdar of a severed head in rubble, from the killing fields of Rayerbazar. Altogether more than a thousand teachers, journalists, doctors, lawyers, artists, writers and engineers were massacred.

Shahidul Alam was sent to study chemistry in the UK in 1972, gaining his Ph.D in London, and taught the subject while at the same time developing an interest in photography, at first making camera club style pretty pictures. But then he came across photographs that were harder to understand and seemed to have more depth – such as Steichen’s ‘Heavy Roses’, said to be the last picture he took in France in 1914, sumptuous but slowly decaying and fading as the Great War started – and began learning to see and to work at finding out what was interesting about such less obvious pictures. While living in Kingsbury in Northwest London he photographed people in his locality and took them to the local paper, who published them as a spread on the back page and paid him a tenner for them (a local paper paying – how times change!) – his first professional work.

He had (and still has)  a particular love of photographing children, and having seen that a child portraiture studio – Young Rascals Studio in Acton – wanted photographers he went for an interview and got the job, and was soon the most successful of their photographers, earning around £350 a week, a pretty good wage at the time.

After a while, although he was doing well financially he decided that what he was doing was not something he wanted to devote his life to, and he made up his mind to return to Dhaka with his savings of £2800, and go back and live with his parents and try and become a photographer and take part in the life of his own country . It wasn’t easy to find any employment there, so he set up his own business as a photographer as well as starting to teach photography and work with communities.

Alam was at pains to point out that he had no problem with white western  photographers coming to photograph in his country, but that he felt that photographers from countries in the majority world had an understanding of their own communities that provided them with a different viewpoint. He wanted a pluralistic world in which different people got to tell stories, but was against the kind of monopolistic view that media around the world tended to project of countries like his own. This was brought home strongly to him while on a visit to Northern Ireland when a five-year-old showed her surprise at seeing him playing with a few coins. Even at that age she knew that people from Bangladesh didn’t have any money.

Increasingly too he began to question his own position in his own society, as a middle class man with a camera – and characteristically began to do something practical about it. In 1994 he set up a women’s’ photography group, bringing a woman to the country to teach them, and he also began teaching photography to classes of working class children.  He then set up the Pathshala school of Photography, now recognised as a world-leading school for photojournalism, with its students and ex-students gaining exceptional success in international competitions. It is also possibly unique in that all of those finishing the course have found work as photographers, though Alam did say that the market for photographers in Bangladesh was now becoming saturated and he was having to think about encouraging some students to work in ancillary professions such as picture editing and picture research.

It was great to see in his photographs and a short film clip how photography was being taken to the people in Bangladesh, with mobile exhibitions mounted on bullock carts and cycle carts being taken into villages, and also the work with village children. Alam also founded and directs the Chobi Mela international festival of photography held in Dhaka every two years which he set up is the largest photography festival in Asia and takes photography out on the streets (and on a boat) with a very different atmosphere to most festivals.

Through his photographic agency Drik, (now part of a wider multimedia organisation) set up in 1989, Alam has worked hard to change the way that rich world publications deal with events in Bangladesh and the majority world generally, although not always yet with great success. From 1983 the political events in his country turned him to documenting the political movement against the military rule of General Ershad which lasted, with minor changes until 1991. During the later years of that period there was increasing disorder and a ban on reporting pro-democracy activities – which newspapers responded to by ceasing publication. During this time Alam kept sending out pictures of the political events to news organisations around the world – who ignored them , as to them it wasn’t news. The only time the world press took any interest in Bangladesh was at times of natural disasters  – cyclones and floods. (Presumably, though he didn’t say so, this became news because of the pressure from the major aid agencies, who avoid involvement in ‘political’ issues.)

Alam’s talk was entitled ‘When the lions find their storytellers‘, from the widespread African proverb “Until the lion has his own storyteller, the hunter will always have the best side of the story.” Whoever does not have a voice is almost always going to be the loser. His life’s work has been trying to tell the lions’ story and to teach the lions so they can tell their own story.

Drik Picture Agency has played an important part in this, and more recently has set up ‘Majority World‘, a platform set up to allow “indigenous photographers, photographic agencies and image collections from the majority world to gain fair access to global image markets” and to present image buyers with “the the wealth of fresh imagery and photographic talent emerging from the Majority World.”

© 2011, Peter Marshall

He ended his talk with a little about two of his heroes, and the final image was what is now perhaps his best-known photograph, possibly the last official portrait of Nelson Mandela. As always, Alam had a story to tell, of how he was held up travelling from Mexico to take it and thought he had missed his chance to take the picture, but hearing about his transport problem, Mandela actually rescheduled the sitting for two days later. The picture seemed to be a suitable backdrop against which to take his picture and I got out my Fuji X100 and took a few frames from my third row seat, some of which needed rather drastic cropping.

© 2011, Peter Marshall

Questions at the end of the talk brought out some other vast aspects of his work that he had not included, including the work he and his fellow photographers have undertaken over the years on the vast environmental problems of his country, much of which is likely to disappear as global warming leads to sea level rise.

One questioner brought up the problem of the relationship between documentary and art photography, and of how Alam has managed to work so effectively across both spheres. It was during his answer that he removed the pair of ordinary inexpensive sandals he was as always wearing and held them up into the light, saying put them in a gallery with the right display and lighting and they would sell as a work of art for thirty or forty thousand pounds (I did think he might have to change his name to Tracey Emin as well) before putting them back on his feet and saying these are now just sandals again. It was only a part of his response, but like much of his talk, one that promoted thought. He also talked about the Crossfire project on extra-judicial killings in Bangladesh which rather than attempting to look at these by documentary photographs of events he made large format colour images of the places where the killings had taken place, exhibiting them together with the facts about the events in what he called “A quiet metaphor for the screaming truth” – and which was closed and barricaded by armed police – but as I also mentioned here was opened in the road outside the gallery.

It was a talk that was full of hope and inspiration, but one that also left me with something of a feeling of despair for the situation of photography in my own country. In Bangladesh things seem much starker and the struggles and possibilities more obvious. Here photography often seems strangled, choked by the money and prejudices of the art world, distorted by academia. We’ve seen the abandonment of our major documentary resource, Side Gallery, by the Arts Council and the continued side-lining of our most democratic photography festival, the East London Photomonth, by the photographic establishment.

Shahidul Alam’s first solo retrospective in the UK,  ‘My Journey as Witness‘ opens at Tristan Hoare’s gallery in the Wilmotte Gallery at Lichfield Studios, 133 Oxford Gardens, London W10 6NE on 6th October, and runs until 18 November 2011, with a  book of the same title being launched the in the UK on October 10 by Skira, Milan. Copies are actually already on sale and I took a short look at it at the National Geographic Store. It is certainly a tribute to Alam that the first volume in what Skira intend to be a multi-volume series on the arts of Bangladesh is devoted to him and to photography. The book has an introduction by Sebastião Salgado and preface by Raghu Rai.

Also here on >Re:PHOTO you can read about two earlier exhibitions curated by Alam, in  ‘Bangladesh 1971‘ at Autograph and ‘Where Three Dreams Cross’ at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2010. Writing about World Photography Day earlier this year (a piece prompted by a post on Shahidul News) I concluded:

Photography may have started in France (and England) and perhaps came of age in the twentieth century in Europe and the USA. But now much of the more interesting work is happening elsewhere.

It seems a good way to end this over-long piece too.
