{"id":9373,"date":"2019-03-09T09:26:11","date_gmt":"2019-03-09T09:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=9373"},"modified":"2019-03-13T14:38:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T14:38:34","slug":"berlin-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=9373","title":{"rendered":"Berlin 13: Old Garrison Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/07\/berlin\/20110724-d0614.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alter Berliner Garnisonfriedhof<\/em>, the listed\u00a0 Old Garrison Cemetery on\u00a0\u00a0the Kleine Rosenthaler Strasse at the corner of Linienstrasse is one of the oldest burial grounds in Berlin, founded\u00a0around 1706, although I think the oldest graves still here date from the early 19th century.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/07\/berlin\/20110724-d0618.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Wilhelm Alfred von Buddenbrock (1796-1863) and his wife Julie (1796-1872)<br \/>\nThe name is a variant of Buddenbrook, a common North German name used by Thomas Mann.<\/small><\/p>\n<p>Initially it was only used for the burial of sodiers from regiments actually quartered in the city, but from 1804 burials were allowed for all regiments stationed in Berlin. The cemetery was much larger, and was in two distinct parts, the larger for men and this remaining smaller part for officers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/07\/berlin\/20110724-d0620.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While most of Berlin&#8217;s cemeteries were relocated to the suburbs, this continued in use with burials up to the end of the Second World War.
