{"id":8150,"date":"2018-02-15T09:11:16","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T09:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=8150"},"modified":"2018-02-14T14:16:27","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T14:16:27","slug":"the-price-we-pay-for-devaluing-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=8150","title":{"rendered":"The price we pay for devaluing photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The full title of photographer <em>Kenneth Jarecke<\/em>&#8216;s piece on &#8216;<em>Medium<\/em>&#8216; is &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@kennethjarecke\/the-broke-system-breaking-you-60502ddc2949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Newsrooms Abandoned Photojournalism &#8211; And the price we pay for devaluing photography<\/a>&#8216;, and I think it&#8217;s an interesting view.<\/p>\n<p>Jarecke, born in Nebraska, USA in 1963, has worked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contactpressimages.com\/photographers\/jarecke\/jarecke_bio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contact Press Images<\/a> since he was 20, going around the world as a photojournalist, and has also worked for TIME. He is probably best known for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanphotomag.com\/story-behind-ken-jareckes-horrific-and-controversial-gulf-war-photo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iconic and controversial picture<\/a> from the Gulf War, first published in American Photo in 1991. You can see more of his work on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennethjarecke.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">own web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His is obviously an American view, but I think in some ways the situation in the UK is worse, with few news outlets having any real interest in much beyond celebrities and the latest scandal. America still has many local papers which still employ a number of photographers and probably many more who actually pay for photographs rather than begging them from members of the public. His article was written in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/news\/these-tools-will-help-you-find-right-images-your-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">These tools will help you find the right images for your stories<\/a> published by <em>Poynter<\/em>, where\u00a0 you can also\u00a0find some responses they\u00a0asked for others to make on\u00a0that story.<\/p>\n<p>Here in the UK, my union, the <em>NUJ,<\/em> are having a month long campaign, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuj.org.uk\/campaigns\/useitpayforit\/\" target=\"_blank\">#Useitpayforit<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which you can also read about in<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuj.org.uk\/news\/amateur-photographers-should-charge-for-published-work-says-new\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amateur photographers should charge for published work, says new NUJ campaign<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuj.org.uk\/news\/major-publishers-pictures-budget-is-less-than-your-daily-cup-of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Major publisher&#8217;s pictures budget is less than your daily cup of coffee a week<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which I understand the company concerned has said is inaccurate, though they haven&#8217;t yet given a figure to correct it. But I did a search and failed to find any mention of\u00a0the campaign on the Amateur Photographer web site.<\/p>\n<p>I think most photographers like me will be used to getting e-mails and phone calls from local papers asking if they can use my work, &#8220;<em>of course we&#8217;ll give you a credit<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 My response is simply to tell them that of course they can use my work\u00a0so long as they buy a licence from the appropriate\u00a0agency it is with.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think any of them ever has gone on to use an image, even though the prices are usually ridiculously low.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The full title of photographer Kenneth Jarecke&#8216;s piece on &#8216;Medium&#8216; is &#8216;How Newsrooms Abandoned Photojournalism &#8211; And the price we pay for devaluing photography&#8216;, and I think it&#8217;s an interesting view.
