{"id":698,"date":"2009-06-25T10:36:53","date_gmt":"2009-06-25T10:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=698"},"modified":"2009-06-25T10:36:53","modified_gmt":"2009-06-25T10:36:53","slug":"photoespana-2009-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=698","title":{"rendered":"PHotoEspa\u00f1a 2009 Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can read the details of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.phedigital.com\/index.php?sec=noticia&amp;id=228\" target=\"_blank\"> PHotoEspa\u00f1a 2009 Awards<\/a> on their web page (in English) but the two major awards, the  <em>PHotoEspa\u00f1a Baume &amp; Mercier 2009 Award<\/em> went to <em>Malick Sidib\u00e9<\/em> (Mali, 1935 or 6), and the\u00a0 <em>Bartolome Ros Award <\/em> to Spanish photographer <em>Isabel Mu\u00f1oz<\/em>, born in Barcelona in 1951 and based in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<em>Malick Sidib\u00e9<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written on several occasions about <em>Sidib\u00e9 <\/em>who has become deservedly well-known over recent years and last year was\u00a0 given the 2008 ICP Infinity <em>Lifetime Achievement<\/em> award. He opened his portrait studio in Bamako in 1962 and among his other awards are the <em>Hasselblad Foundation International Award<\/em> in 2003. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lensculture.com\/sidibe.html?thisPic=100\" target=\"_blank\">Lensculture <\/a>has some pictures by Sidib\u00e9, and a transcription of an interview with him.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackelbury.co.uk\/artists\/sidibe\/sidibe.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hacklebury<\/a>\u00a0 also has a selection of his pictures and a brief biography while the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackshainman.com\/dynamic\/artwork_display.asp?ArtworkID=220\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Shainman Gallery<\/a> have an installation view of one of his shows and some works in their frames.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Isabel Mu\u00f1oz<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What strikes me immediately about the work of <em>Isabel Mu\u00f1oz<\/em>, which you can see on her web site (her projects are under the link &#8216;<em>La Obra<\/em>&#8216;, but &#8216;<em>Making Off<\/em>&#8216; throws some light on her methods) is both the precision of her black and white work, but also its enormous theatricality.
