{"id":6543,"date":"2016-11-07T10:02:25","date_gmt":"2016-11-07T10:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=6543"},"modified":"2016-11-06T20:03:01","modified_gmt":"2016-11-06T20:03:01","slug":"irwin-klein-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=6543","title":{"rendered":"Irwin Klein published"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six years ago I wrote a short note on this site, <a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1003\" target=\"_blank\">The Color Photographs of Irwin Klein, <\/a>about the work of a photographer whose life ended tragically in March 1974. You can now read the story I didn&#8217;t know then of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kleinarts.com\/WP\/irwins-death\/\" target=\"_blank\">his death<\/a> on a web site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kleinarts.com\/WP\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Irwin Klein: Photographer <\/em><\/a>(1933-1974) created by his nephew <em>Nikolai Klein<\/em> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Rather more of his photographs appear to have survived, and there is a quite extensive archive on the web site, including the colour images of Brooklyn. There are over 300 of his Brooklyn slides on the site, although quite a few scenes are represented by two or more very similar views.<\/p>\n<p>I was emailed about this site by Nikolai&#8217;s brother <em>Ben Klein<\/em>, who also commented on my 2010 post and has compiled and edited a book on the photographer&#8217;s major project, <em>The Settlers.<\/em> &#8216; He tells me that the slides were discovered in Klein&#8217;s widow&#8217;s house less than ten years ago.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraskapress.unl.edu\/product\/Irwin-Klein-and-the-New-Settlers,677138.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Irwin Klein and the New Settlers<\/a>, Photographs of Counterculture in New Mexico<\/em>, ISBN 978-0-8032-8510-1 is edited by Benjamin Klein with essays by David Farber, Tom Fels, Tim Hodgdon, Benjamin Klein, and Lois Rudnick, a foreword by Daniel Kosharek and an introduction by Michael William Doyle is published by the University of Nebraska Press.<\/p>\n<p>You can download a PDF from the university site which includes the contents pages, preface, introduction and opening essay <em>From Innocence to Experience: Irwin B. Klein and the New Settlers of Northern New Mexico<\/em>, by Benjamin Klein and Tim Hodgdon.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Irwin-Klein-and-the-New-Settlers-146275905780775\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook Page<\/a> and a number of article on the web about Irwin Klein, including one in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/pasatiempo\/art\/utopia-new-mexico-irwin-klein-and-the-new-settlers\/article_f815f451-68c8-5a3d-a29c-7eef7614ef90.html\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a>. He is represented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.domeischelgallery.com\/photoexhibit_klein_show.html\" target=\"_blank\">D Gallery<\/a>, where you can see his most famous image, <em>Minnesota Fire, 1962<\/em> and other pictures from the 2009 show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.domeischelgallery.com\/photoexhibit_klein_show.html\" target=\"_blank\">Last Look: The Photographs of Irwin Klein<\/a> (1933 -1974).<\/p>\n<p>I think most photographers will recognise that striking &#8216;<em>Minnesota Fire<\/em>&#8216; image though they may well &#8211; like me &#8211; have forgotten who took it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six years ago I wrote a short note on this site, The Color Photographs of Irwin Klein, about the work of a photographer whose life ended tragically in March 1974.
