{"id":6316,"date":"2016-08-09T09:25:13","date_gmt":"2016-08-09T09:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=6316"},"modified":"2016-08-09T09:25:13","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T09:25:13","slug":"usa-the-dark-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=6316","title":{"rendered":"USA &#8211; The Dark Side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Mental Floss<\/em> is not a magazine I&#8217;ve come across before, but <a href=\"https:\/\/mentalfloss.atavist.com\/the-photographer-who-captured-americas-dark-side\" target=\"_blank\">The Photographer Who Captured America\u2019s Dark Side<\/a> by<em> Lucas Reilly<\/em> which originally appeared in the January\/February 2015 issue is a well-written introduction to the work of <em>Robert Frank<\/em> and his travels across the nation to take the pictures that became &#8216;The Americans&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t say a great deal about his actual work but does a good job in situating it, which is perhaps something that those who have only come across his work in more recent times needs saying. I&#8217;ve written so many times that &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nga.gov\/content\/ngaweb\/features\/robert-frank\/the-americans-1955-57.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Americans<\/a>&#8216; is a book every photographer should have a well-thumbed copy of on her\/his bookshelf that I feel sure that if you are reading this you already do, but if not, it is readily available in many editions &#8211; and although a copy of the first edition might cost you \u00a310,000 you can buy more recent ones secondhand for a more sensible price &#8211; less than \u00a320 if you look around. The various editions all differ slightly, but not enough to make a real difference; I think the best is perhaps still the Aperture version from the late 1970s, but that is now a little dear.<\/p>\n<p>There is enough about Frank to keep you busy for a week or two on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americansuburbx.com\/artists\/robert-frank\" target=\"_blank\">American Suburb X<\/a>, but Mental Floss turns out to be something of a disappointment. In the middle of the Frank piece is a box reading &#8216;<em>For more stories like this visit mentalfloss.com<\/em>&#8216; but if you do you find yournself on a page of pretty average clickbait, fluff with little or no photographic interest linking to other web sites and blogs. Diligent wading through half a dozen pages of trash only yielded a single piece that enticed me at all, on a unique mansion for sale in Mile End, London. <\/p>\n<p>Clicking on this was a little disappointing, as I&#8217;d already read a far better article <a href=\"http:\/\/spitalfieldslife.com\/2010\/08\/24\/at-malplaquet-house\/\" target=\"_blank\">At Malplaquet House<\/a> on the same house some years back on Spitalfields Life, though the <a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/uk\/architecture\/45380\/a-forgotten-antique-filled-mansion-in-london-is-up-for-grabs\" target=\"_blank\">MF piece<\/a> did link to its own inspiration, the more recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mymodernmet.com\/profiles\/blogs\/malplaquet-house-london-mansion\" target=\"_blank\">Mysterious 265-Year-Old Mansion in London Is Rediscovered and Being Sold for Millions<\/a> by <em>Kristine Mitchell<\/em> published on June 18, 2016 on <em>My Modern Met<\/em>. I you have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fyfemcdade.com\/E1\/London\/Mile-End-Road\/homes\/beds-5\/property.vtx?featured=true&#038;p=9DED4E43-F8BA-486F-9127-1AA604C6DE4E&#038;stype=sales\">around \u00a32,950,000<\/a> to spare it might be worth viewing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mental Floss is not a magazine I&#8217;ve come across before, but The Photographer Who Captured America\u2019s Dark Side by Lucas Reilly which originally appeared in the January\/February 2015 issue is a well-written introduction to the work of Robert Frank and his travels across the nation to take the pictures that became &#8216;The Americans&#8217;.
