Although I’ve known the work of conceptual artist Joan Fontcuberta<\/em> for years, it was only in 2007 that I met him in person, when he was showing Landscapes without Memory<\/em><\/a> at the FotoArtFestival <\/em><\/a>in Bielsko-Biala where I was speaking.<\/p>\n

Although I wasn’t impressed by the work that he was showing –\u00a0 computer generated landscapes that seemed to me of no photographic interest and not essentially different from the ray-traced images that I had seen many others – including my own sons – produce in the past, he gave a superb presentation particularly about two of his projects which it seems to me achieve an exceedingly rare successful combination of the photographic and conceptual.<\/p>\n

Most impressive for me was his collaboration with Pere Formiguera – Dr Ameisenhaufen’s Fauna<\/a> and I was also very impressed by the Sputnik Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Lens Culture<\/a> you can see a selection of his images, including some from these projects (and some of those I find of less interest) and also listen to a 20 minute audio interview made by Jim Casper <\/em>with Fontcuberta in late 2005 in Paris. It repeats much of what I heard him say in Poland, but if you’ve not hear him talk about his work is well worth a listen.
