{"id":604,"date":"2009-03-25T17:14:12","date_gmt":"2009-03-25T17:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=604"},"modified":"2009-03-25T20:55:12","modified_gmt":"2009-03-25T20:55:12","slug":"pirkle-jones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=604","title":{"rendered":"Pirkle Jones (1914 &#8211; 2009)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/03\/23\/arts\/23jones.html?_r=1&amp;ref=obituaries\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a><\/em> has a nice obituary of <em>Pirkle Jones<\/em>\u00a0 who died on March 15, at the age of 95.\u00a0 From 1947-53 he worked as assistant to <em>Ansel Adams<\/em>, printing his work.<\/p>\n<p>His best known photographs were from a 1956 collaboration with <em>Dorothea Lange<\/em> <em>The Death of a Valley<\/em>, which filled a whole issue of <em>Aperture <\/em>in 1960, and in 1968 after his wife, the Berlin-born photographer <em>Ruth-Marian Boruch<\/em> (1922-97) became a friend of Eldridge Cleaver&#8217;s wife, the two of them photographed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/pov\/pov2004\/apantherinafrica\/special_photo_01.html\" target=\"_blank\">Black Panthers<\/a> in California. Their pictures of this controversial group drew crowds to the gallery when shown later that year at a San Francisco museum.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the slide show on the NYT and the Black Panther pictures by Jones and Baruch, you can see 10 pictures including some Adamesque landscapes at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.josephbellows.com\/artists\/pirkle-jones\/images\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Bellows Gallery<\/a>, a small selection on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artist\/569514\/pirkle-jones.html\" target=\"_blank\">Artnet <\/a>and 22 pictures at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfmoma.org\/artists\/5138\/artwork\" target=\"_blank\">SFMoMA. <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times has a nice obituary of Pirkle Jones\u00a0 who died on March 15, at the age of 95.\u00a0 From 1947-53 he worked as assistant to Ansel Adams, printing his work.
