{"id":523,"date":"2009-01-12T20:49:38","date_gmt":"2009-01-12T20:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=523"},"modified":"2009-01-12T20:49:38","modified_gmt":"2009-01-12T20:49:38","slug":"suit-for-prince","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=523","title":{"rendered":"Suit for Prince"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s interesting to read, thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/cityfile.com\/dailyfile\/3770\" target=\"_blank\">Cityfile<\/a> that French photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickcariou.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Cariou<\/a> has filed a suit against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardprinceart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Prince<\/a> and his gallery for using his photographs published in the 2000 book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickcariou.com\/rasbook.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Yes Rasta<\/em><\/a> in a series of paintings that were recently on show at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagosian.com\/exhibitions\/2008-11-08_richard-prince\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gagosian<\/a> New York. Not least because the precendents suggest that Cariou is probably unlikely to win, despite a certain obvious justice in his case. Prince&#8217;s work clearly could not exist without his creative input, and to suggest otherwise seems to me to deny the creative input of Cariou&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>I rather suspect that if Prince&#8217;s work had been shown in Paris, the result of a case in the French courts would be rather different. I don&#8217;t have any time for the appropriation of photographs &#8211; but then I&#8217;m a photographer.
