Eugene Smith Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve not consciously come across the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.josephsywenkyj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Symenkyj<\/a> before, though a few of the pictures on his web site seem familiar, but his is a name I&#8217;ll probably now remember even if I&#8217;m rather unsure how to pronounce it. I find he is an American photographer who graduated from the <em>New York School of Visual Arts<\/em> in 2002, and what finally brought him to my attention in a post on the <a href=\"http:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/15\/w-eugene-smith-awards-for-humanistic-photography\/\" target=\"_blank\">NY Times Lens blog <\/a>is that he has been awarded this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/smithfund.org\/humanistic-photography\" target=\"_blank\">W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography<\/a> for his long-term project on family life in Ukraine.\u00a0 On the web site you can also see his work on more recent events on the streets of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund has also made an award to a more familiar name, Spanish American photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&amp;VF=MAGO31_10_VForm&amp;ERID=24KL535GR6\">Moises Saman<\/a> for his four years of work on the Arab Spring and its aftermath, and there is some fine work on his Magnum pages.<\/p>\n<p>James Estrin in his Lens post also mentions that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murielhasbun.com\/Artist.asp?ArtistID=38612&amp;Akey=Q25N9C3T\">Muriel Hasbun<\/a> &#8216;received the Howard Chapnick award for the \u201cLaberinto\u201d project, a collaborative education and cultural preservation project that documents artists who worked during the Salvadoran civil war.&#8217; I have to say I find most of her work on line leaves me rather cold, rather too academic for my liking, though I do admire her &#8216;<em>Conversacio<\/em>&#8216;, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murielhasbun.com\/GalleryMain.asp?GalleryID=123585&amp;AKey=Q25N9C3T\" target=\"_blank\">photographic\u00a0 &#8216;conversation<\/a>&#8216; exchanging photographs with<a href=\"http:\/\/aphototeacher.com\/2007\/07\/03\/pablo-ortiz-monasterio\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Pablo Ortiz Monasterio<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve not consciously come across the work of Joseph Symenkyj before, though a few of the pictures on his web site seem familiar, but his is a name I&#8217;ll probably now remember even if I&#8217;m rather unsure how to pronounce it.
