{"id":4330,"date":"2014-08-12T10:16:23","date_gmt":"2014-08-12T10:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=4330"},"modified":"2014-08-12T10:16:23","modified_gmt":"2014-08-12T10:16:23","slug":"inge-morath-danube-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=4330","title":{"rendered":"Inge Morath &#038; Danube Revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have to admit to something of a blind spot so far as<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingemorath.org\/index.php\/inge-morath\/early-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">Inge Morath<\/a> <\/em>is concerned.\u00a0 I knew the name of course, and that she was one of the first women to join <em>Magnum<\/em>, a little after <em>Eve Arnold<\/em>, in 1953 (becoming a full member in 1955.) She had earlier met Capa when she went to Paris as a writer working with<em> Ernst Haas<\/em> in 1949 and had then worked for <em>Magnum<\/em> as an editor and researcher before coming to London.<\/p>\n<p>She started taking her own pictures in 1951 and she worked for <em>Simon Guttman<\/em> at <em>Report<\/em>, first as a secretary and then as a photographer before returning to Paris and <em>Magnum<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>Russell Miller<\/em> in <span class=\"st\"><em>Magnum<\/em>: <em>Fifty Years at the Front Line of History <\/em>says she did the little jobs that the men didn&#8217;t want and that her first, of judges in rose contests, paid only $100.\u00a0 That would be worth over $900 allowing for inflation, not a bad little job &#8211; how times have changed for photographers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Looking at her work on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&amp;VF=MAGO31_10_VForm&amp;ERID=24KL53Z47M\" target=\"_blank\">Magnum<\/a>, there are certainly pictures that I remember having seen and admire, but none that I would have looked at and recognised as her work; I might well have thought they were probably by a Magnum photographer but I don&#8217;t see any particular strong personal style.\u00a0 Perhaps it might be more apparent if I&#8217;d ever owned one of the various books she produced.<\/p>\n<p>After her death in 2002, Magnum established the <a title=\"Link: Inge Morath Award\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ingemorath.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/the-foundation\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\">Inge Morath Award<\/a>, made annually to one or more exceptional young women photographers, and her family set up the <a title=\"Link: Inge Morath Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ingemorath.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/the-foundation\/\" target=\"_self\">Inge Morath Foundation<\/a> the following year to preserve and share her legacy.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve for some time been following the progress of <a href=\"http:\/\/danuberevisited.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Danube Revisited<\/a>, the <em>Inge Morath Truck Project<\/em>, a photographic road trip taking a travelling exhibition of Morath&#8217;s work from the Danube area along by the river in a converted 7.5T truck, together with nine of the winners of the Inge Morath Award who have worked as a collective taking pictures and promoting <em>&#8220;the power and potential of photography through night projections, artist talks, photo forums and engaging in cultural exchange with institutions and organizations along the route<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The nine are <em>Olivia Arthur,\u00a0Emily Schiffer,\u00a0Lurdes R Basol\u00ed,\u00a0Claire Martin,\u00a0Claudia Guadarrama,\u00a0Ami Vitale,\u00a0Jessica Dimmock,\u00a0Mimi Chakarova<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Kathryn Cook<\/em>, and they hope &#8221; <em>to discover for themselves the region that meant so much to Inge Morath throughout her life<\/em>&#8221; and see &#8220;<em>the River itself becoming a metaphor for the kind of long-term, sustained international projects to which they have devoted their careers.<\/em> &#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/308721393\/danube-revisited-the-inge-morath-truck-project\" target=\"_blank\">Kickstarter <\/a>was used to fund the project, with an appeal for $50,000 raising $59, 563 from 323 backers.<\/p>\n<p>On the <em>Danube Revisited<\/em> site you can see a great<a href=\"http:\/\/danuberevisited.com\/#\/galleries\/danube-by-inge-morath\/072_Morath_1994-117\" target=\"_blank\"> portfolio of pictures by Morath<\/a>, from the region where she began work in 1958, visiting again over the years but only finally being able to complete her project after the fall of the Soviet Union gave freer access in the 1990s &#8211; and her book &#8216;Danube&#8217; was published in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The links at the left of the <em>Danube Revisited<\/em> pages currently show portfolios of earlier work by the participating photographers,\u00a0 but you can see 60 pictures from Danube Revisited in a<a href=\"http:\/\/projects.newyorker.com\/portfolio\/danube\/#1\" target=\"_blank\"> New Yorker portfolio<\/a>, and you can also see pictures and many links on <a href=\"http:\/\/danuberevisited.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tumblr<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have to admit to something of a blind spot so far as Inge Morath is concerned.\u00a0 I knew the name of course, and that she was one of the first women to join Magnum, a little after Eve Arnold, in 1953 (becoming a full member in 1955.)
