{"id":2969,"date":"2013-09-30T10:05:32","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T10:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=2969"},"modified":"2013-09-29T10:53:23","modified_gmt":"2013-09-29T10:53:23","slug":"munif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=2969","title":{"rendered":"Munem Wasif&#8217;s Old Dhaka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think the first time I wrote about Bangladeshi photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.munemwasif.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Munem Wasif <\/a>was five years ago, when he was one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=230\" target=\"_blank\">five from PDN&#8217;s Top Thirty<\/a> &#8216;New and Emerging Photographers to watch&#8217;. Later in the year I commented when the Prix Pictet bankers selected\u00a0 him for the commission to document WaterAid\u2019s Chittagong Hill Tracts Project in Bangladesh, and a couple of years later there was another <a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1016\" target=\"_blank\">short post here<\/a> linking to an interview on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lensculture.com\/articles\/munem-wasif-salt-water-tears\" target=\"_blank\">Lensculture <\/a>and his work at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agencevu.com\/photographers\/photographer.php?id=232\" target=\"_blank\">Agence Vu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although I don&#8217;t ever seem\u00a0 to feel now that I want to work in black and white again, I still appreciate great black and white images like those of Wasif. What brought him back to mind was <a href=\"http:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/26\/chaos-and-harmony-in-old-dhaka\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Chaos and Harmony in Old Dhaka<\/a> on the New York Times Lens blog, which has an audio slideshow of work from his new book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.galerieclementinedelaferonniere.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Belongings<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0 which &#8220;explores the rhythms of daily life in Old Dhaka&#8221; in which the photographer talks about the old city and his work.<\/p>\n<p>He works with a remarkable simplicity of equipment, one camera, a 28mm lens and a bottle of water.\u00a0 28mm was for many years my favourite lens too, though I&#8217;ve long abandoned working with a single lens.
