{"id":282,"date":"2008-05-07T17:01:15","date_gmt":"2008-05-07T17:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=282"},"modified":"2008-05-07T17:01:15","modified_gmt":"2008-05-07T17:01:15","slug":"just-shares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=282","title":{"rendered":"Just Shares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It doesn&#8217;t really seem very long ago that I was photographing the closing event of <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2000\/12\/dec.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Jubillee 2000<\/a>, with <strong>Ann Pettifor<\/strong> on the stage at Trafalgar Square, but the fact that I took most of the pictures in black and white is a reminder of how much things have changes since then.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2000\/12\/00c0113.jpg\" height=\"302\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\nThe candlelit march up Whitehall in Dec 2000<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jubilee 2000 did get things moving on debt relief, although there is still a long way to go, and since then we&#8217;ve had other campaigns &#8211; such as &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2005\/02\/feb.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Make Poverty History<\/a>&#8216; which have added to the impetus.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2005\/02\/03\/050203_n150s.jpg\" height=\"297\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\nApplause for Nelson Mandela in a packed Trafalgar Square, Feb 2005<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ann Pettifor is now working for <em>Advocacy International<\/em>, which works with &#8220;<em>low-income country governments, and with organisations working to promote positive development, investment and environmental sustainability in those countries<\/em>&#8221; and <em>Operation Noah<\/em>, a Christian-based climate-change campaign.<\/p>\n<p>I went to hear her speak at a rally and seminar organised by &#8216;<em>Just Share<\/em>&#8216;, &#8220;<em>a coalition of churches and development agencies seeking to engage with the City of London on issues of global economic injustice.<\/em>&#8221; Just Share is based at a city church (St Mary-le-Bow of bells fame) and the rally was held bang in the middle of the city, at Bank, in front of the <em>Royal Exchange<\/em>, with the <strong>Bank of England<\/strong> to one side and the <em>Mansion House<\/em> across the road. Speaking along with her was <em>Larry Elliott<\/em>, economics editor of <em>The Guardian<\/em> for the last 11 or so years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2008\/05\/02\/20080502-d1044.jpg\" height=\"297\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Listening to Ann Pettifor speaking at Royal Exchange.<br \/>\nLarry Elliott waits to speak at right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not an economist, but as I understand it, Pettifor argued that our present &#8216;Credit Crisis&#8217; is a symptom of a deeper structural problem in our economy, the creation of money by the banks in a way that is no longer linked to reserves and production, but entirely dependent on trust.  Once people lose faith in the banks, we have a problem.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t entirely sure about the link that she made with this and the traditional Christian teaching against usury, which seems to me something rather different.
