{"id":225,"date":"2008-02-28T10:37:06","date_gmt":"2008-02-28T10:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=225"},"modified":"2008-02-28T10:37:06","modified_gmt":"2008-02-28T10:37:06","slug":"the-romance-of-east-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=225","title":{"rendered":"The Romance of East London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m still not sure where my walk around London&#8217;s East End at the Museum of London on Thursday 6 March will take me, but it will I think be a personal journey that reflects on my photographic involvement with the area over the years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingsoflondon.co.uk\/Library\/romance1.gif\" title=\"Image- reload if not showing - invite\" alt=\"Image- reload if not showing - invite\" height=\"500\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event, from 6-9 pm, is a part of the Mayor&#8217;s &#8216;east&#8217; festival, is free and everyone is welcome.<\/p>\n<p>One place I may start.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingsoflondon.co.uk\/Library\/3k-46.jpg\" title=\"Image- reload if not showing - St Katherines\" alt=\"Image- reload if not showing - St Katherines\" height=\"308\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<em>St Katherine&#8217;s Dock closed in 1968 and these warehouses were<br \/>\ndemolished in the early 1970s, shortly after this picture was taken.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Walking across Tower Bridge and seeing the warehouses of St Katherine&#8217;s Dock, about to be demolished was where I started to photograph East London.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingsoflondon.co.uk\/Library\/86-6g44.jpg\" title=\"Image- reload if not showing - Victory Cafe\" alt=\"Image- reload if not showing - Victory Cafe\" height=\"300\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Victory Cafe, 1986<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And it will certainly include the pictures such as the cafe above that were in Cathy Ross&#8217;s recent book, <em>The  Romance of Bethnal Green<\/em> (she will be signing copies &#8211; and you can see more pictures in an earlier &gt;Re:PHOTO post, <a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=103\" target=\"_blank\">Bethnal Green Blues<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Brick Lane is sure to feature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/buildingsoflondon.co.uk\/Library\/989231.jpg\" title=\"Image- reload if not showing - Brick Lane\" alt=\"Image- reload if not showing - Brick Lane\" height=\"668\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Brick Lane, 1998<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then perhaps there are some of my pictures from a sometimes surreal docklands after the closure, the colour series of shop fronts and street detail which reflect the changing populations of the area, the black and white records of much of its urban landscape. The<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/river-lea.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">River Lea<\/a> <\/em>and around, from long before its Olympic disruption to the present, <em>Canning Town <\/em>(I&#8217;ve written a <a href=\"http:\/\/londonartscafe.org.uk\/canning01.htm\" target=\"_blank\">walk<\/a>) , the <em>DLR<\/em>,  demonstrations, religious festivals and more.
