Opened in 1761 it was the first true canal in Britain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A Manchester Canal - 2026\" class=\"wp-image-19337\" srcset=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0471-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These pictures are from a short walk into the city centre from Ancoats along a different canal, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ashton_Canal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ashton canal<\/a> and ending on the Rochdale Canal at Piccadilly Basin. Also built largely to bring coal from the city, it was built in the 1790s. Traffic had virtually ended by the Second World War and finally ended in 1958. The canal was left to rot and became unnavigable, but was eventually restored for leisure use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A Manchester Canal - 2026\" class=\"wp-image-19338\" srcset=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/20260819-d0476-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once lined with industry, residential development around this section of the canal began around 1990 and on this section few of the original buildings remain.
