Stop Trident March & Rally<\/strong>: Britain first deployed submarines carrying nuclear missiles in the Polaris programme from 1968, and these were replace by Trident<\/a> in 1994-6. In 2006 Tony Blair won a vote on the principle of renewing the Trident system in the House of Commons with the support of the Tory opposition, though 95 Labour MPs rebelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People from Bradford had arrived with their own Trident missile, painted with the message ‘Trident – Immoral, Obsolete, Militarily Useless’<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Research into the replacement continued and this march came a few months before a House of Commons vote in July 2016. Again there was a significant Labour revolt, with 41 MPs voting against and 41 not voting, but 140 Labour MPs backed the Conservatives and it passed by a large majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 60,000 marched through London on Saturday 27th Feb 2016 to a mass rally in Trafalgar Square against the plans to replace the UK’s Trident nuclear weapons at a cost of \u00a3180 billion or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say Trident is immoral and using it would cause catastrophic global damage with a global nuclear war possibly bringing all human life on the planet to an end. These weapons of mass destruction don’t keep us safe, though they do hugely enrich the arms companies and their shareholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many argued that the use of nuclear weapons was illegal under international law, and a year after the decision to update Trident was taken the UN adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons<\/a> (TPNW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far 74 countries have signed up to the TPNW which “prohibits the development, testing, production, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons<\/em>” and for those already possessing them it gives “a time-bound framework for negotiations leading to the verified and irreversible elimination<\/em>” of their nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course no countries which currently have nuclear weapons have so far signed the treaty, and Britain continues on its program to extend its capabilities. In June 2025 Keir Starmer announced the RAF is to buy at least 12 new F-35A fighter jets<\/a> which can drop nuclear bombs as a part of its commitment to NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as increasing the risk of nuclear war, these new nuclear aircraft hugely divert more much needed money from essential spending on services like the NHS, schools and housing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costs of the Trident replacement over its 30 year lifetime are currently estimated to be at least \u00a3205 billion and the MoD estimate for the F-35 programme of \u00a357 billion is bound to be subject to the usual huge cost overruns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
