In 2006 Tony Blair won a vote on the principle of renewing the Trident system in the House of Commons with the support of the Tory opposition, though 95 Labour MPs rebelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/02\/27\/20160227-d810.jpg\" alt=\"Stop Trident March &amp; Rally - 2016\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>People from Bradford had arrived with their own Trident missile, painted with the message &#8216;Trident &#8211; Immoral, Obsolete, Militarily Useless&#8217;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Research into the replacement continued and this march came a few months before a House of Commons vote in July 2016. Again there was a significant Labour revolt, with 41 MPs voting against and 41 not voting, but 140 Labour MPs backed the Conservatives and it passed by a large majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/02\/27\/20160227-d857.jpg\" alt=\"Stop Trident March &amp; Rally - 2016\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Rev Gyoro Nagase and another from the Nipponzan Myohoji order at Battersea&#8217;s Buddhist Peace Pagoda<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 60,000 marched through London on Saturday 27th Feb 2016 to a mass rally in Trafalgar Square against the plans to replace the UK&#8217;s Trident nuclear weapons at a cost of \u00a3180 billion or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/02\/27\/20160227-d880.jpg\" alt=\"Stop Trident March &amp; Rally - 2016\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They say Trident is immoral and using it would cause catastrophic global damage with a global nuclear war possibly bringing all human life on the planet to an end. These weapons of mass destruction don&#8217;t keep us safe, though they do hugely enrich the arms companies and their shareholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/02\/27\/20160227-d888.jpg\" alt=\"Stop Trident March &amp; Rally - 2016\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Lindsey German, Stop the War, Kate Hudson, CND General Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, SNP First Minister, Scotland and Green Party MP Caroline Lucas<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many argued that the use of nuclear weapons was illegal under international law, and a year after the decision to update Trident was taken the UN adopted the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_on_the_Prohibition_of_Nuclear_Weapons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons<\/a> (TPNW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/02\/27\/20160227-d083.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Nicola Sturgeon takes a &#8216;selfie&#8217; of herself with Kate Hudson<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So far 74 countries have signed up to the TPNW which &#8220;<em>prohibits the development, testing, production, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons<\/em>&#8221; and for those already possessing them it gives &#8220;<em>a time-bound framework for negotiations leading to the verified and irreversible elimination<\/em>&#8221; of their nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/02\/27\/20160227-d867.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course no countries which currently have nuclear weapons have so far signed the treaty, and Britain continues on its program to extend its capabilities.
