{"id":17757,"date":"2025-08-15T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T08:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=17757"},"modified":"2025-08-08T10:38:05","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T09:38:05","slug":"gallery-protests-sikhs-kashmiris-kurds-sewol-sothebys-black-lives-matter-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=17757","title":{"rendered":"Gallery Protests, Sikhs, Kashmiris, Kurds, Sewol, Sotheby&#8217;s &#038; Black Lives Matter &#8211; 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Gallery Protests, Sikhs, Kashmiris, Kurds, Sewol, Sotheby&#8217;s &amp; Black Lives Matter<\/strong>: Saturday 15th August 2015 was probably the day I photographed more events than any other day, covering a total of 8 protests as well as taking a few pictures of London as I travelled around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d925.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery Protests, Sikhs, Kashmiris, Kurds, Sewol, Sotheby's &amp; Black Lives Matter\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Handing out fliers at Tate Modern wearing a sunflower T-shirt supporting the National Gallery strikers<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the 61st day of the PCS strike against privatisation at the National Gallery, and at Tate Modern staff were handing out leaflets calling for staff who had already been outsourced to get the same pay and conditions as directly employed workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d161.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery Protests, Sikhs, Kashmiris, Kurds, Sewol, Sotheby's &amp; Black Lives Matter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was Indian Independence Day, and outside India House I photographed Sikhs calling for the release of political prisoners and Kashmiris calling for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Trafalgar Square Iranian Kurds remembered those killed in the fight for self-determination and a monthly silent protest remembered the Korean children killed when the Sewol ferry sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d471.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery Protests, Sikhs, Kashmiris, Kurds, Sewol, Sotheby's &amp; Black Lives Matter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Mayfair, United Voices of the World were protesting in the streets around Sotheby&#8217;s, calling for proper sick pay, paid holidays and pensions and demainding the reinstatement of two union members sacked for protesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d1577.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery Protests, Sikhs, Kashmiris, Kurds, Sewol, Sotheby's &amp; Black Lives Matter\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally I went to Grosvenor Square for a protest close to the US embassy against the collective and systemic unlawful arrests and killings\/attacks of black people in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read and see more pictures from all of these events &#8211; and a few pictures of London on My London Diary. Here I&#8217;ll post very short introductions to the events with a picture and a link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Gallery 61st day of Strike &#8211; Trafalgar Square<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d835.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Cindy Udwin, PCS rep at the gallery, sacked for her union activities. The strikers were determined to get her re-instated &#8211; and eventually did<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A short rally ended the daily picket on the 61st day of the PCS strike against privatisation at the National Gallery, with speeches and messages of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">National Gallery 61st day of Strike<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Equalitate at Tate Modern<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d096.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Vicky of Equalitate holds up their flyer calling for equal pay and conditions<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Privatised visitor assistants at Tate Modern &amp; Tate Britain get \u00a33 an hour less than directly employed colleagues, are on zero hours contracts and do not get the same employment rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#equalitate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Equalitate at Tate Modern<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sikhs call for release of political prisoners &#8211; Indian High Commission<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d115.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Indian Independence Day, Sikh protesters from Dal Khalsa supported the call by hunger striker Bapu Surat Singh for the release of Sikh political prisoners and for the &#8216;2020&#8217; campaign for a referendum for an independent Sikh state, Khalistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#sikhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Sikhs call for release of political prisoners<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kashimiris Indian Independence Day call for freedom &#8211; Indian High Commission<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d177.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kashmiris protested at the Indian High Commission on Independence Day, observed as &#8216;black day&#8217; in Indian military occupied Kashmir. They want freedom for their country, now a disputed territory with areas occupied by India, Pakistan and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#kashimiris\">Kashimiris Independence <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#kashimiris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Day <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#kashimiris\">call for freedom<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kurdish PJAK remembers its martyrs &#8211; Trafalgar Square<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d1233.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Iranian Kurds from the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) remembered its fighters killed in the fight against Iran and ISIS for self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#pjak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kurdish PJAK remembers its martyrs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16th &#8216;Stay Put&#8217; Sewol silent protest &#8211; Trafalgar Square<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d1203.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The monthly silent protest remembered the victims of the ferry tragedy, mainly school children who obeyed the order to &#8216;Stay Put&#8217; on the lower decks as the ship went down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/aug.htm#sewol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">16th &#8216;Stay Put&#8217; Sewol silent protest<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">United Voices &#8211; Reinstate the Sotheby&#8217;s 2 &#8211; Mayfair<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2015\/08\/15\/20150815-d338.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A police office tells Sandy Nicoll to get up and off the road with no success<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Voices of the World marched noisily around the block at Sotheby&#8217;s demanding reinstatement of Barbara and Percy, cleaners sacked for protesting for proper sick pay, paid holidays and pensions.
