{"id":17722,"date":"2025-08-05T09:08:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T08:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=17722"},"modified":"2025-08-02T10:34:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T09:34:36","slug":"black-lives-matter-london-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=17722","title":{"rendered":"Black Lives Matter London &#8211; 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Black Lives Matter London<\/strong>: Although there is a long history of Black struggles against racism in Britain the Black Lives Matter movement with its hashtag #BlackLivesMatter only really became established here in 2016, three years after it was first formed in the US in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d643.jpg\" alt=\"Black Lives Matter London - 2016\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This protest, on Friday 5th August 2016, five years and a day after the killing of Mark Duggan by police in 2011, along with those at Heathrow and in Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham were part of a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2016\/aug\/05\/black-lives-matter-protest-sparks-heathrow-traffic-chaos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">National Shutdown<\/a>&#8216; which marked the emergence of Black Lives Matter UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d695.jpg\" alt=\"Black Lives Matter London - 2016\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rally took place in Altab Ali Park on Whitechapel Road. Altab Ali, a Bangladeshi textile worker was stabbed to death in a racist attack by three teenagers in the adjoining street on 4th May 1978. In 1998 the park, formerly St Mary&#8217;s Park, was renamed in his memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d265.jpg\" alt=\"Black Lives Matter London - 2016\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Marcia Rigg, whose brother Sean Rigg was killed by police in Brixton in 2008, raises her fist in salute<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\"The event was called by BLMUK, a community movement of activists from across the UK who believe deeply that #BlackLivesMatter but are not affiliated with any political party.
