{"id":17149,"date":"2025-02-25T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T09:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=17149"},"modified":"2025-02-22T10:25:39","modified_gmt":"2025-02-22T10:25:39","slug":"muslims-unite-against-samarra-bombing-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=17149","title":{"rendered":"Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing &#8211; 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing:<\/strong> Following the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2006_al-Askari_mosque_bombing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">bomb attack on the al-Askari mosque<\/a> in Samara, Iraq there were several days of sectarian violence between Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims despite attempts by religious leaders there to calm the situation. The structure of the 10th century mosque was badly damaged and although the bombing caused no direct casualties there were many deaths in the few days that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0074.jpg\" alt=\"Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing - 2006\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The bombing was probably carried out by a cell of Al-Qaeda in Iraq although they did not admit responsibility. The US, then occupying Iraq, played down the aftermath of the bombingm claiming the death toll was around 300, but later reports suggest around ten times that number died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0126.jpg\" alt=\"Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing - 2006\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The march was led by children with placards &#8220;Sunni &amp; Shia United!!!&#8221; , &#8220;Have You No Mercy&#8221;\u2026<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The al-Askari mosque bombing was the start of the First Iraqi Civil War and the mosque was again damaged by a bomb the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0254.jpg\" alt=\"Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing - 2006\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A simple equation: Osama + Bush = Al-Qaida<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the account of the<a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/feb.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> march and rally in London<\/a> on Saturday 25 February, 2006 I wrote for <em>My London Diary<\/em> at the time &#8211; will the usual corrections and some of the many pictures I posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0374.jpg\" alt=\"Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing - 2006\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Muslims beating their breasts on the march,<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Muslims Unite Against the Samarra Bombing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0307.jpg\" alt=\"Muslims Unite Against Samarra Bombing - 2006\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>British Muslims Stand United Against Terrorism. On the march in Park Lane<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Around ten thousand British Shia and Sunni Muslims marched together through London on Saturday 25th in an unusual gesture of solidarity following the bombing of the mosque at Sammara in Iraq, one of the holiest of Muslim shrines, containing the tombs of the 8th and 9th grandsons of Muhammed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0450.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The march was led by women and children, with the men following behind. They carried placards and chanted calling for an end to violence, denouncing the Wahhabis and Al-Qaeda. Many also carried the Iraqi flag in its pan-arab colours of black, white, red, and green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2006\/02\/25\/060225_d0500.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting from Hyde Park, the march went down Park Lane and Piccadilly to end in a rally in Trafalgar Square.
