{"id":1615,"date":"2012-04-20T10:22:38","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T10:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1615"},"modified":"2012-04-20T10:22:38","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T10:22:38","slug":"french-photography-museum-of-bievres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1615","title":{"rendered":"French Photography Museum of Bi\u00e8vres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve never visited the<em> French Photography Museum of Bi\u00e8vres<\/em>, although it is only a short trip from Paris on the RER and only a short bus ride (or a longish walk) from where I stayed on my first visit to Paris. The <a href=\"http:\/\/parisisinvisible.blogspot.co.uk\/2009\/07\/bievre.html\" target=\"_blank\">River Bi\u00e8vre<\/a> one of two streams through the small town, features in some of<a href=\"gallica.bnf.fr\/ark:\/12148\/btv1b3100068w\" target=\"_blank\"> Atget&#8217;s photographs<\/a> taken around the start of the twentieth century in the 13th arrondissement in the south of the city, but was at that time being hidden below ground, though I walked along some of its course in the city in 1984 when photographing for my project <a href=\"http:\/\/peter-marshall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Revisited<\/a> &#8211; more recently published as &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1344\" target=\"_blank\">In Search of Atget<\/a>&#8216;. But I&#8217;ve yet to visit Bi\u00e8vres for real, though I spent some time today both on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bievres.fr\">web site <\/a>of this &#8216;village at the gates of Paris&#8217; with a remarkable number of clubs for its just over 5000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/peter-marshall.com\/1984bw\/set1\/848o-paris-bw191.jpg\" title=\"\u00a9 1984, Peter Marshall\" alt=\"\u00a9 1984, Peter Marshall\" height=\"275\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Paris 13e, August 1984    Peter Marshall<\/small><br \/>\nOne of these associations is the <em>Photo Club Paris Val-de-Bi\u00e8vre<\/em>, founded in 1949 by <em>Jean Fage <\/em><span class=\"st\"><em> <\/em>(1905-1991) <\/span>and his son <em>Andr\u00e9 Fage<\/em>, the news of whose death aged 85 on April 16, 2012 I read in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lalettredelaphotographie.com\/entries\/6385\/bievres-death-of-andre-fage\" target=\"_blank\">La Lettre de la Photographie<\/a> (in English.) They also founded the annual <em>Bi\u00e8vres Photo Fair<\/em> and began the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bievres.fr\/Decouvrir-Bievres\/Capitale-de-la-photographie\" target=\"_blank\">collection of equipment and images<\/a> that became the first French museum of photography, opening to the general public in premises provided by the council in the early 1960, and in 1964 the<em> Association du Mus\u00e9e Fran\u00e7ais de la Photographie<\/em> was formed. The collection was\u00a0 donated to the <em>Conseil G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l\u0092Essonne<\/em> in 1986 on condition that it remained in Bi\u00e8vre and that a new museum be built to house it.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the museum on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museedelaphoto.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">web site<\/a>, and as well as viewing some on-line presentations including a general history of photography, portraits of artists by <em>Sabine Weiss <\/em>and anti-Nazi photomontages by <em>Marinus<\/em>, you can also wander for ages around images of the many items in <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.photographie.essonne.fr\/board.php\" target=\"_blank\">its collection<\/a>.
