{"id":1614,"date":"2012-04-20T10:26:05","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T10:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1614"},"modified":"2012-04-20T10:26:05","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T10:26:05","slug":"encore-sapeurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1614","title":{"rendered":"Encore Sapeurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was interested (as I often am) by a post on <em>Conscientious<\/em>, <em>Joerg Colberg<\/em>&#8216;s blog on Congolese photographer<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/jmcolberg.com\/weblog\/2012\/04\/baudouin_mouanda\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baudouin Mouanda<\/a><\/em>, who had a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gasworks.org.uk\/exhibitions\/detail.php?id=670\" target=\"_blank\"> show I missed at <em>Gasworks<\/em><\/a> in Vauxhall last summer following a residency there. I quite probably walked past it, as it&#8217;s a stone&#8217;s throw from London&#8217;s best repair shop, <em>Fixation<\/em>, and in an area I know well, from long before it had galleries, where friends of mine I visited regularly lived in a council flat close to the Oval cricket ground. The page at Gasworks has some information and a few pictures as well as installation views from three of his projects: <em>La Sapologie<\/em>, (2008), <em>D\u00e9lestage<\/em>, (2010) and <em>Sur la Trottoir du Savoir<\/em>, (2011).<\/p>\n<p>Colberg&#8217;s post links to a set of pictures <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afriqueinvisu.org\/-hip-hop-societe-libreville,2208-.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hip Hop &amp; soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \/ Libreville<\/a> on <em>Afrique in Visu<\/em>, and\u00a0 to the web site of the Brazzaville <a href=\"http:\/\/eliliblog.free.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Generation Elili collective<\/a> where there is some French text about Mouanda, and I also found some pictures of young women working as <a href=\"http:\/\/eliliblog.free.fr\/?p=1168\" target=\"_blank\">car mechanics<\/a> in Brazzaville I felt were of rather less interest than the other projects, along with a rather more promising set on the <a href=\"http:\/\/eliliblog.free.fr\/?p=1254\" target=\"_blank\">elections in Congo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in some respects the most interesting work &#8211; and the image chosen by Colberg for his post came from this &#8211; was the project featured on the Leica Camera site that he links to, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.leica-camera.com\/photographers\/interviews\/baudouin-mouanda-the-ins-and-outs-of-s-a-p-e\/\" target=\"_blank\">La Sapologie<\/a>. As well as the pictures there is also an interview with the photographer about the work.<\/p>\n<p>Readers of this blog with a long memory may remember that I wrote a post on <a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=992\" target=\"_blank\">Sapology<\/a> around two years ago, following the opening in London of photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelhoppengallery.com\/artist,show,3,159,0,0,0,0,0,0,daniele_tamagni.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daniele Tamagni<\/a>\u0092s &#8216;<em>Gentlemen of Bacongo<\/em>&#8216; and the publication of his book of the same title. A portfolio of work from this project had earlier won him the portfolio prize in the <em>Young Photographers Canon Award<\/em> 2007.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2010\/05\/06\/20100506-d0359.jpg\" title=\"\u00a9 2010, Peter Marshall\" alt=\"\u00a9 2010, Peter Marshall\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<small>A sapeur poses in front of Daniele Tamagni\u0092s pictures at Michael Hoppen (Peter Marshall, 2010)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>It was a memorable opening in particular for the presence of one of the&#8217;<em> People of Elegance<\/em>&#8216;, who I photographed for the blog.
