{"id":1340,"date":"2011-06-24T16:43:49","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T16:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2011-06-24T16:43:49","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T16:43:49","slug":"jiros-cafe-reopens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1340","title":{"rendered":"Jiro&#8217;s Caf\u00e9 Reopens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flowersgalleries.com\/artists\/118-artists\/3803-jiro-osuga\/#\/section-work\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Jiro Osuga<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u0092s installation, <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Caf\u00e9 Jiro<\/span>, in the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Flowers Gallery<\/span> in Cork St, London in May 2009 was for me certainly the wittiest art show I&#8217;d seen in years, and you can get some idea of it from my pictures in <a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=639\" target=\"_blank\">this blog<\/a> and on <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2009\/04\/apr.htm#jiro\" target=\"_blank\">My London Diary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0064-2.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jiro&#8217;s Caf\u00e9 <\/strong>has now returned to life, with a significant difference:\u00a0 what was then a caf\u00e9 in an art gallery is now an art gallery in a very real caf\u00e9, the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=1289\" target=\"_blank\">Queen&#8217;s Terrace Cafe<\/a><\/em>, just off the Finchley Road a few steps from St John&#8217;s Wood station. Rather than just walking around a gallery you can now enjoy morning coffee, a fine lunch or afternoon tea while surrounded by a unique work of art.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0105-2.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One whole wall &#8211; the longest display space in the small caf\u00e9 &#8211; is covered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flowersgalleries.com\/projects\/4228-cafe-jiro-\/#\/section-images\/\" target=\"_blank\">a panel<\/a> that was in the previous Flowers show, but there are three large works for the new installation along with a number of smaller pieces &#8211; including three in the smallest room.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0554.jpg\" height=\"600\" width=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I spent a very enjoyable evening at the opening, talking to many old friends and meeting new. Most were finding a great deal of fun in sorting out the answers to a gallery quiz by Jiro, exploring a few of the historical and art-historical references in his work.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0110-2.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Drinking in the caf\u00e9 you can find many famous figures, including Marx, Lenin, Che, Mao, the Queen and a &#8216;famous frog&#8217; I&#8217;m not allowed to name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0459.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0464.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Mireille Galinou, who had the idea for this cultural cafe, with arms folded<\/small><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0131-2.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/06\/23\/20110623-d0549.jpg\" height=\"299\" width=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Queen&#8217;s Terrace Caf\u00e9 is described by <em>Mireille Galinou<\/em> who conceived and runs it as a cultural caf\u00e9, and has a programme of events which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> a talk &#8216;Food in Art&#8217; by Professor Michael Kauffman, former Director of the Courtauld Institute (Thursday 14 July, 6.00pm &#8211; \u00a36.00 includes a drink)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>a walk on pubs, hotels and houses in St John&#8217;s Wood led by Mireille, whose book on the history of the area,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?K=9780300167269&amp;sf1=author&amp;st1=Mireille%20Galinou&amp;m=1&amp;dc=1\" target=\"_blank\">Cottages and Villas: The Birth of the Garden Suburb<\/a>, was published by Yale University Press last year (Thursday 25 August, 6-8.00pm  &#8211; \u00a36.00 includes a drink)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Places for these events should be booked in advance, either at the caf\u00e9, by phone (020 7449 2998) or at queensterracecafe@bitinternet.com &#8211; places are limited and tickets are non-refundable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <em>exhibition quiz<\/em>, devised by Jiro Osuga, is available during the show, and on Thursday 25th August he will be there for a &#8216;Quiz Night&#8217; when the answers will be revealed and prizes awarded for the best entries &#8211; entry \u00a32.00 on the door.<\/p>\n<p>There are also two special projects taking place based on the local area.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Gardens:\u00a0 <\/em>I am working with Mireille Galinou on a documentary project where I do the easy job of taking photographs &#8211; mainly panoramic &#8211; of gardens while she works on &#8220;their basic historical pedigree&#8230;\u00a0 and their owners&#8217; aims and recollections&#8221; for a publication and exhibition at the Queens Terrace Caf\u00e9.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Studios<\/em>: Photographer <em>John Chase <\/em>is working on a second project on artists&#8217; studios in the area.
