{"id":12379,"date":"2021-08-05T09:13:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-05T09:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=12379"},"modified":"2021-08-01T13:14:03","modified_gmt":"2021-08-01T13:14:03","slug":"black-lives-matter-london-5-aug-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=12379","title":{"rendered":"Black Lives Matter London; 5 Aug 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d648.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Five years ago on the evening of Friday August 5th 2016, I was with a large crowd in Altab Ali Park. in East London to commemorate the many UK victims of state violence, including Mark Duggan, Sarah Reed, Mzee Mohammed, Jermaine Baker, Sean Rigg, Leon Patterson, Kingsley Burrell and over 1500 others, disproportionately black, since 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><figcaption><em>A relative of <a href=\"https:\/\/gal-dem.com\/police-corruption-press-collusion-death-sheku-bayoh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sheku Bayoh<\/a>, killed by police in Scotland in 2015 speaking<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was called <a href=\"https:\/\/ukblm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BLMUK<\/a>, a community movement of activists from across the UK who believe deeply that #BlackLivesMatter but are not affiliated with any political party. They called for justice and an end to racialised sexism, classism and homophobia and a new politics based on community defence and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d254.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 BLMUK registered as a community benefit society, with the name Black Liberation Movement UK, but they continue to campaign under the names Black Lives Matter UK and BLMUK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><figcaption><em>Marcia Rigg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seanriggjusticeandchange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whose brother Sean Rigg was killed by police<\/a> in Brixton <\/em>in 20<em>08,<\/em> raises her fist<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Forming a legal society enabled them to access the \u00a31.2m in donations from GoFundMe, and they have already distributed <a href=\"https:\/\/ukblm.org\/blmuk-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a number of small grants<\/a> to fund projects by other groups, including the<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/uffcampaign.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Friends and Families Campaign<\/a>,<\/em> grass roots trade unions <em>United Voices of the World<\/em> (UVW) and<em> International Workers of Great Britain <\/em>(IWGB), UK based campaigning groups and others serving the black community, including the <em>African Rainbow Family<\/em>, <em>Sistah Space<\/em> and <em>B\u2019Me Cancer Communities<\/em> and two international Black organisations, the <em>Sindicato de Manteros de Madrid<\/em> (Street Vendors Union) and<em> Abahlali baseMjondolo<\/em> in Durban, South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/08\/05\/20160805-d299.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Stephanie Lightfoot-Bennett whose twin brother<a href=\"https:\/\/4wardeveruk.org\/cases\/adult-cases-uk\/police-restraint-2\/leon-patterson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Leon Patterson<\/a> was battered to death by police in a Stockport cell in 1992<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event took place five years and one day after the shooting by police of Mark Duggan in Tottenham, which led to riots across London. The police officer who shot Duggan refused to give an interview with the IPCC but later submitted a written testimony. Police accounts of the event &#8211; themselves inconsistent &#8211; did not tally with those of other witnesses, including the driver of the minicab which was carrying Duggan, nor with the ballistic evidence.
