{"id":11913,"date":"2021-03-08T08:59:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T08:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=11913"},"modified":"2021-03-08T10:33:35","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T10:33:35","slug":"8-march-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=11913","title":{"rendered":"8 March: International Women&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2002\/03\/02314-41.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>2002: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2002\/03\/mar.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Women&#8217;s Strike<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>March 8th is celebrated in many countries around the world as International Women&#8217;s Day and is a national holiday in over 25, particularly across the former USSR, as it has its early roots in a 1909 National Woman&#8217;s Day organised in New York by the Socialist Party of America and was then taken up by socialist women in Europe, where there were widespread International Women&#8217;s Day protests on March 19, 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2003\/03\/slides\/030308_n139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><figcaption>2003: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2003\/03\/mar.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Womens Strike<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The date of March 8th was set in Germany in 1914, and adopted since then in most countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2004\/03\/06\/040306_n0468.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>2004: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2004\/03\/mar.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Women&#8217;s Strike<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was officially adopted by the Soviet Union after the 1917 revolution and spread to other communist countries including China, continuing as a largely communist festival until it was adopted in the late 1960s by feminists campaigning for equal rights and opportunities and an end to violence against women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2008\/03\/08\/20080308-d1303.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"302\"\/><figcaption>2008: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2008\/03\/mar.htm#rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Million Women Rise: International Women&#8217;s Day March<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1975 the UN proclaimed March 8th as the UN Day for women&#8217;s rights and world peace, and since then we have seen both left wing protests and more corporate celebrations and events taking place on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/03\/08\/20110308-d0780.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>2011: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2011\/03\/mar.htm#iwd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 Years of International Women&#8217;s Day<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2012\/03\/08\/20120308-d0145.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>2012: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2012\/03\/mar.htm#women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women on the Bridge: International Womens Day<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since March 8th is not a holiday in the UK, some Interternational Women&#8217;s Day events take place on the nearest weekend rather than on the day itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2014\/03\/08\/20140308-d483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>2014: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2014\/03\/mar.htm#million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Million Women Rise March<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/03\/08\/20160308-d590.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>2016: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2016\/03\/mar.htm#setherfree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Set Her Free &#8211; until today &#8211; in the size and militancy of the protests on International Women&#8217;s Day, particularly with the emergence of the Women&#8217;s Strike Assembly which organises against racist agendas and far-right attempts to foment racism, and organises exploited migrant workers in the service industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2020\/03\/08\/20200308-d0036.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><figcaption>2020: <a href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2020\/03\/mar.htm#womenstrike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Women&#8217;s Day block Oxford St<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> All of the pictures in this post were taken on March 8th and come from a variety of events over the years.
