{"id":10428,"date":"2020-01-23T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=10428"},"modified":"2020-01-22T17:34:10","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T17:34:10","slug":"march-to-the-common","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-photo.co.uk\/?p=10428","title":{"rendered":"March to the common"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2019\/08\/17\/20190817-d0754.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><figcaption>The banner &#8216;Are We The Last Generation blocks the main road for the march to take place<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewisham Council&#8217;s web site records that Blackheath&#8217;s common has played host to more than its share of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>rebel gatherings<\/li><li>military encampments and exercises<\/li><li>royal meetings<\/li><li>religious festivals<\/li><li>sports<\/li><li>fairs<\/li><li>circuses <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>and a host of other activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it goes on to list some of them, including Danish invaders in 1011, Wat Tylers anti-poll tax rebels in 1381, Jack Cade&#8217;s rebel yeomen in 1450, rebel Cornishmen in 1497 and John Wesley who preached there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2009\/08\/26\/20090826-d0595.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>2009 Climate Camp general meeting at Blackheath<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It fails to mention the chartists and the suffragettes who met their, or the Climate Camp with whom <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"I travelled there in 2009 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2009\/08\/aug.htm#swoop\" target=\"_blank\">I travelled there in 2009<\/a>, recorded <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"their setting up (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2009\/08\/aug.htm#climate\" target=\"_blank\">their setting up<\/a> and later  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"returned to photograp (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2009\/08\/aug.htm#camp\" target=\"_blank\">returned to photograph<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2019\/08\/17\/20190817-d0709.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly it is an area that has a strong association with rebels over the years and so it was highly appropriate that South East London Extinction Rebellion chose it for the location of their  two-day festival&nbsp; on Global Climate Change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2019\/08\/17\/20190817-d0760.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I went to photograph their march from Greenwich to the festival site, and almost had to leave before it began, as the samba band which was to play a major role in bringin it to the notice of people in Greenwich was around an hour late in arriving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2019\/08\/17\/20190817-d0806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I stayed with the marchers as they blocked the main streets of Greenwich and made their way up into Greenwich Park, climbing with them most of the way to the top of the hill before I had to leave and run downhill to catch a train back to central London and the next event I wanted to cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/mylondondiary.co.uk\/2019\/08\/aug.htm#common\" target=\"_blank\">XR Rebel Rising March to the Common<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center\">All photographs on this and my other sites, unless otherwise stated, are taken by and copyright of Peter Marshall, and are available for reproduction or can be bought as prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:10px\" class=\"has-text-align-center\">There are no adverts on this site and it receives no sponsorship, and I like to keep it that way.
